Every Web site needs a host :

The host part of a web site the actual computer where the files that make up a web site are stored. People view your web site with their web browser (and sometimes other software) by pointing them to the server that hosts your site. This is accomplished by the typing in of a url (or domain name) into the address bar of a web browser, or by clicking a link that has this same information in it. This infortmation includes a domain name.

All the domain names are kept in big lists on computers called Name Servers. These computers point requests for domain names from web browsers and the like to the actual physical location of the web sites files.

Web Hosting Costs have gone waaay down

Web hosts or servers, used to cost hundreds of dollars a month. Increased competition and better products for managing servers has helped the cost of hosting a web site fall. Now hosting a site is cheaper than ever.
